Weekend Wrap-Up: Midwest is Best

Screen Shot 2015-05-31 at 8.11.55 PMHello, hello! Bringing you the latest weekend wrap-up…from Tuesday evening! Welp.

After an 8-hour drive from Ohio, our little caravan pulled into the District right before 2am on Monday, and that day flew by in a flurry of back-to-work responsibilities and boxes. Boxes? Alex and I aren’t 100% settled into the new place yet (as of tonight, I’d say 75%), and even the small act of unpacking my suitcase meant finishing assembling dresser drawers…

No matter! This weekend was worth recapping. I’ll just let the photos do most of the talking.

After a glorious day of running and stand-up paddle boarding in big, blue, beautiful Lake Michigan on Thursday, I hopped in the car and drove the 4.5 hours south to Ohio. The Michigan mitten is so big. I was a big slosh of emotions when I finished driving: happy to be home in NW Ohio and pretty teary about having left my family. No matter how old I get, that part never gets easier.

Friday started off bright and early in Wildwood Preserve Metropark across the street from my childhood home. It’s the same park I truly started to build a little mileage in during the winter, and it was nice to revisit it with longer mileage and a little greenery. Post-run breakfast? Eggs benedict + a plate of chocolate chip pancakes at the Original Pancake House — which I sadly discovered in college is not original to Toledo. Haha!

The rest of the day was packed with the appointments, and I finished off the night with a Mud Hens baseball game and time with old, beloved friends. (The Mud Hens are the minor league affiliate of the Detroit Tigers).

On Saturday, I started off the morning with another run in Wildwood. Half marathon training called for a 5K and I was committed to running the whole thing. No run/walk method this time! My legs felt great after a week of running, walking, hiking and stand-up paddle boarding so I knew I could do it. Happy to say I stuck to it and put on a little more speed than usual!

Saturday evening included a wedding for a childhood friend, and my heart was so full to spend time with friends I don’t get to see enough. Those best friends will even crawl out of bed the next morning and greet you at the door with bagels to watch Arsenal’s first game of the season with you…at 8:30am. I don’t want to talk about how they ended up playing. Any Arsenal fans out there who can commiserate?!

I ran a couple of errands on Sunday — some a little more important than others. Visited my favorite local coffee shop to buy a bag of the Michigan Cherry coffee my father raved about because he usually refuses to drink flavored coffee. Drove to my local running store of choice to browse all of the Toledo/Glass City Marathon (see you in, 2016!) apparel and picked up two pairs of Injinji socks. My first! Hugged and squeezed my family for a whole minute when they returned from Michigan but before I left for D.C. and then loaded up the car for the trip. Our caravan took a pit-stop at another local staple, Mr. Freeze, for ice cream before we left the city. Ice cream is fuel!(?)

My go-to order is a mud sundae. I am five-years-old.

What’s your go-to ice cream order? What are you favorite places to visit in your hometown?

  1. That mud sundae looks yummy! I’m a sucker for anything with cookie dough. I think my favorite has to be the All Lovin’ No Oven from Coldstone. I love to visit the beach when I’m home (in the summer). I’m looking forward to that in a few weeks actually.
