2016 Catch-Up

A few things have changed since November, and I think a little catch-up is necessary before we move forward. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • I did find my wedding dress in NYC that weekend, and it was out of some kind of Kleinfeld fairytale. The best part? Having those women below join me. My brothers and Dad even made the trip and did a little alternative sight-seeing while we shopped. Wedding planning hasn’t always been at the forefront of my mind the past couple of months (see the next two things), but pieces are coming along as we reach the six month countdown this week! It’s going to be a beautiful day on Mackinac Island.

  • Most importantly, I defended my thesis and officially received my MPH in January. I cannot fully describe how liberating it was to finish. I did it, I did it, I did it!
  • As expected, this celebration was quickly followed by a long, frustrating, job hunt.
  • Alex bought a fancy road bike and a trainer over the winter, and I discovered that if I move the seat alllll the way down, I can use it too! I’ve been putting in some cross training without having to leave my apartment, and I think it made the following possible despite decreased running mileage over the winter…
  • I trained and ran the United NYC Half Marathon in March – my second half! I’ll post a recap up here before I lose memory of all of the details. I think a combination of the rolling hills in the first half and the cold weather irritated my ITB during the second portion of the race (it wasn’t a previous injury I’d been tending to), but I still had an incredible time running through the city, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

  • I ran/walked the Cherry Blossom 5K after opting out of the 10-Miler to continue letting my ITB rest. It was a cold one, but I was still happy to (kind of) cross this race off my DC bucket list.

  • I ran the North Face Endurance Challenge Marathon Relay with my fellow Oiselle birds over the weekend, and it was so worth the cold and my mud-drenched Hokas.

  • As I’ve mentioned once before, I’m thrilled to be running the New York City Marathon this November and raising money for Every Mother Counts. I’m visiting a PT on Monday to check out my ITB, make me aware of any areas in need of a little special strengthening attention, and overall, make sure I get to that start line strong and healthy 🙂

If we were sitting down for coffee today, I could tell you how it feels to be closing out week nine of half marathon training or how long seven straight days at the store can feel, but I think might get stuck on one piece of news…Alex and I are getting married! IMG_4879

We got engaged on Sunday by the Georgetown C&O Canal after a long, happy brunch at Founding Farmers, one Baked+Wired Chocolate Doom cupcake, one bent knee proposal, and a lot of happy tears.

I always loved that piece of D.C., but now I really have a reason to love that place.

Alex has been my best friend and partner for six years, and I couldn’t be happier to spend the rest of our lives together.

One of Alex’s coworkers was sweet enough to photograph the ring before the proposal.
That same evening, our friends celebrated us with champagne and a backyard lit with candles. I FaceTimed my family and called my best friends, and my heart exploded with everyone’s love and kindness. Looks like this fall, I’ll be running with my fiancé…
